Once upon a time I worked for a temporary agency in Chicago. My job was to walk into random law firms with the offer I would work for them one day for free. If they wanted me back for additional work, then they paid the agency. After a while, I landed the job as office manager at a 3-lawyer insurance defense firm.
When Katten Muchin & Zavis (then a firm with nearly 400 lawyers) needed a Manager of Technology Training, I got the job. My first assignment was to arrange the training for everyone from a proprietary word processing system to Word Perfect. (A few years later, I had to reprise the role taking the firm from Word Perfect to Word.) I also managed the firm’s Word Processing Department which ran 3 shifts daily and 2 shifts on weekends. At various times I reported the IT Director and to the HR Director.
